Filey War Memorial, Murray Street
Service Notes
Dan Eaton writes: -
(Albert) Had grown up in Filey and owned a small business as a carriage proprietor before the war. On 20th April 1907 he married Elizabeth Gash and they had a son, Albert Charles, in 1912 at 4, Albion Place, off Murray Street. These details in themselves are important, as Elizabeth's two brothers David and Edward were to be killed in the First World War, whilst their son Albert was to die aged 30 (exactly the same as his father) whilst serving as a gunner in 1942. It is hard to imagine for one woman to suffer the loss of a husband, a son and two brothers throughout the two wars.
Albert enlisted in Hull into the Royal Field Artillery and was placed in 14th Battery, 4th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery at the end of training. He was sent to Mesopotamia in mid 1915 to serve with an Indian Division and returned to Filey on leave in May 1916. He was sent to France shortly afterwards and died of wounds in Amara Hospital Centre a month later. He was buried at Amara War Cemetery
In Flanders Fields...The men of Filey who fought and died during the Great War for Civilization (1914 - 1919)
Note 19 June 2018: Dan's information (above) that Albert was on leave in Filey in May 1916 and was then sent to France where he died of wounds is at odds with his burial in Amara, Mesopotamia (now Iraq). The CWGC Index entry states that Albert died of heatstroke.
